Waikiki Aquarium Seminar Series
Intervention and Selective Restoration for the Future of Hawaiʻi’s Coral Reefs
Monday, July 15, 2019
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Kira Hughes, Program Manager, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology
The #1 threat to corals is thermal stress caused by CO2 emissions, which can result in coral bleaching and even death. This talk will dive deeper into solutions: 1) how we create “Super Corals” in the lab and 2) how we identify corals that are naturally more resistant to thermal stress and selectively propagate those corals within the same bay. We are launching a new project that will incorporate community participation, and hope that you will join us in these efforts to save our local reefs.
