The Our Project In Hawaii’s Intertidal (OPIHI) program focuses on doing scientific research in the culturally and ecologically important Hawaiian intertidal ecosystem. This year we are surveying the macroalgal species near the Natatorium War Memorial. We are replicating a study conducted in 1969 by Doty and colleagues; we are comparing the algal community now to what it used to be 50 years ago. Shifts in the algae community may be caused by land-use changes that have occurred over the past half a century in Waikīkī.
